Gaming to Proficiency

I’ve started using Duolingo to improve my French and it is going very well. The interface created by this platform is really user friendly and welcoming. I feel like I’m playing a video game when I use Duolingo because its developers have designed it to provide incremental rewards and feedback, much like a video game.

Use of colours, sounds, and graphics rewards users for correct answers.

One particularly cool feature of the app is how it allows me to take a placement test at the beginning of my language studies. Rather than starting from scratch, I was able to take a test and indicate where in the progression I should be. I found that I was put in a level which was too easy, so the app allows me to challenge certain sections and unlock more content, which prevented me from becoming bored.

There are 10 castles in the interface, by clicking on a castle that has yet to be unlocked, a user can challenge its content. If successful, all prior content to the given castle becomes unlocked.

I will keep making Duolingo a part of my daily routine, and see how much progress I can make in the time that is left. I will also now begin to explore some other forms of media in order to expose myself to French in context, as well as in a French-Canadian context.
