We took time this week to practice screen casting. I am fortunate to have recorded my screen before, so instead of learning how to do the thing, I got to think about in what situations and for what purpose I might record my screen to share with students. During my limited math university math experience, I found Khan Academy to be an invaluable resource for all kinds of math tutorials. It is hard to believe that this incredibly successful and effective project is really just based around the idea of teaching via screen casting.
In my career as a teacher, I think screen casting could be a useful way to create and store a catalogue of tutorials for students to refer to when stuck on certain concepts or subject matter. A teacher-YouTube channel could almost act as a video FAQ to where students can first refer if they have questions while outside of class. If there is ever a need to return to online schooling à la COVID, having a pre-recorded database of video lessons could be incredibly useful to keep things running smoothly, especially during the initial transition phase from in-person to online.
